Matthew Heywood

About

Engineering lead who works across product and code — shaping what gets built as much as building it.

Leads teams and complex technical projects end to end, and is most useful in the space between design, product and engineering: turning an ambiguous brief into something people can actually use.

Alongside that, a background in music production has led to creative technology work with brands and artists — custom performance hardware for Overmono, generative tools for record labels and radio stations, interactive sites for releases.

ArtlogicEngineering Team Lead2023 – Present

Lead the Websites team at Artlogic, building the platform galleries and artists use to show their work online — shaping its direction and still building it day to day.

  • Leading the migration of the website product onto a modern stack — the architecture and rendering decisions, and the sequencing that keeps thousands of live client sites working throughout.
  • Rebuilt the theming system so every client site styles predictably: fewer surprises for designers, faster onboarding for the services team, and the foundation the design system now sits on.
  • Moved image serving off Cloudinary onto an in-house pipeline — 70% cheaper, instrumented from day one, delivered early.
  • Manage and mentor a team of four engineers and a designer, with the design system a shared responsibility across both.
ArtlogicFull Stack Web Developer2022 – 2023

Built bespoke websites for art fairs, events and blue-chip galleries — rich, content-heavy sites that had to be right on opening night.

  • Owned client relationships and scope on event-driven builds with immovable launch dates. Led the redesign and rebuild of artlogic.net, using it to prove out the platform's new theming engine.
  • Led the accessibility programme to WCAG 2.2 AA across the website products — audits, fixes, client-facing guidelines and team training.
MIMIC Creative AI PlatformResearcher2021

Developed and tested the mimicproject.com platform, exploring AI in creative practice. Built a synthesiser driven by classification and regression models to teach undergraduates the building blocks of AI.

Observe TechnologiesVideo Labeller2020

Labelled and audited video datasets for computer-vision models, working in a team on comparison labelling to produce accurate training data.
